Life Skills Educator - New Start

Department:               New Start

Job Status:                 Full-time, Part-time, and Relief

Reports To:                 Residential Supervisor

Job Type:                     Regular

Position Supervises:  None

Work Schedule:           Varies; day (7am to 3pm), evening (2pm to 10pm), and overnight (10pm to 8am) positions available

**Position is eligible for $2,500 ($1,000 Relief) hiring bonus and $17/hour starting wage**

POSITION SUMMARY

Support New Start residents on their journey through recovery. Provide modeling and support to the residents and their children while they complete the program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS STATEMENT(S)

Participant Services

  • Provide supervision to ensure safety and well-being of all residents at New Start, including the children residing at New Start when appropriate.
  • Participate in activities, while assisting residents in achieving privileges and approving of privileges and requests, as appropriate.
  • Assist residents as needed during meal preparation ensuring proper nutritional needs are met.
  • Provide effective role modeling for residents and their children to encourage healthy lifestyles.
  • Provide support and guidance to residents in achieving their goals.
  • Administer medications to residents as appropriate.
  • Transport residents to appointments as needed using a company vehicle.
  • Supervise and engage in age appropriate activities with children while their mothers attend scheduled groups and counselor/therapist sessions.

Support Services

  • Maintain consistent communication regarding the progress of each resident with other residential staff.
  • Document services, activities and necessary program information.
  • Attend program staff meetings.
  • Attend all trainings required by agency and program standards.
  • Perform job responsibilities professionally, consistent with the agencies code of ethics.

Implementation of Therapeutic & Preventative Skills

  • Set limits utilizing positive reinforcement to strengthen/promote positive behaviors and discourage problem behaviors.
  • Encourage positive behaviors of residents and their children by utilizing effective praise.
  • Assist residents to resolve conflicts, plan ahead, and make decisions.

Facility

  • Maintain safe working conditions.
  • Report any maintenance needs to Residential Supervisor.
  • Comply with Department of Health Standards and Fire Safety Codes.

Other

  • Responsible for other duties as assigned.

POSITIONS QUALIFICATIONS

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education:                          High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience:                         No experience needed; training will be provided.

Skills:                                   Effective communication and problem solving skills are necessary. Calm demeanor and ability to de-escalate situations. Be a positive role model.

Certifications & Licenses:  Valid driver’s license required if providing transportation services.

Other Requirements:           All candidates must be at least 21 years of age.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, manually manipulate, reach outward and above shoulders, speak, climb, crawl, squat, kneel, and bend on a daily basis.
  • Capability to lift, carry, push or pull up to 50lbs on a daily basis.
