This is a Full-Time 40 Hour Weekly position with the Department of Social Services Human Services Center. For more information on the DSS, please visit http://dss.sd.gov .

This position transports patients by various means (i.e., wheelchair, Broda Chair, state vehicle) to therapies, activities, appointments, and outside placements; transports pharmaceuticals and other items within the hospital; maintains inventory of patients' personal belongings; and performs various tasks to assist in the Admissions Department.

This position works four 10-hour shifts 8:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with a rotating day off during the week, but may vary according to needs of facility. This position also works a rotating holiday schedule.

Licenses and Certifications:

The South Dakota Human Services Center provides a comprehensive employee orientation, including completion of the Certified Nurse Aide (C.N.A.) certification.

A valid driver's license is required.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Knowledge of:
  • basic physical and psychological needs of mentally ill and chemically dependent patients;
  • patient safety procedures.

Ability to:
  • operate various transport vehicles;
  • accurately observe, recognize, report and record physical symptoms and significant behavioral characteristics of patients;
  • relate to and work constructively with patients and detect significant or unusual patient behavior;
  • follow oral and written instructions and established policies and procedures;
  • deal with aggressive behavior;
  • listen and be empathetic with patients;
  • assist in lifting and moving of patients;
  • lift 75 pounds;
  • walk and push carts for delivery of various items, often walking 2-3 miles per day;
  • be flexible and work in a fast-paced environment in all types of weather;
  • input data using a computer and maintain an inventory of patients' personal belongings;
  • operate motor vehicles;
  • operate Broda Chair and wheelchairs;
  • operate a hot press for labeling patients' clothing;
  • coordinate patient transport trips;
  • operate a variety of office equipment.

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
