Job Description

Summary of Position


The Collections Care Intern is responsible for ensuring collections safety procedures are followed, records are
maintained and relevant processes are in place to maintain a safe environment and standardized processes for the
preservation and account of objects within the historical artifact collection. This is a non-exempt position.

Reports to the Museum Director and Curatorial Staff

Responsibilities


1. Ensure relevant process and procedures are in place and followed for safely maintaining and safeguarding of
artifacts within the collection.
2. Maintenance and preservation of artifacts including cleaning items, documentation of condition surveys,
maintaining records, and proper storage of pieces to maintain conservation will be a priority.
3. Performing substantial historical, scientific and archeological research may be required in order to treat items
and minimize deterioration or restore them to their original state.
4. Additionally, the Collections Care Intern may be involved with emergency planning, pest management and other
collections care tasks.
5. Performs other responsibilities as required by the Museum Director or Curatorial Staff.


Qualifications


? Applicants should have a high standard of quality with excellent time management skills.
? Exceptional communication skills.
? Experience with art handling/gallery work/use of power tools is welcomed but not required.
? Applicants must display situational and self-awareness as they will be working directly with the permanent
collection.
? A degree from an accredited university or college in history, museum studies, library science, or a closely related
field preferred.
? Familiarity with American Indian cultural heritage organizations/local repositories and their materials preferred.


Physical Demands


The ability to perform moderate physical activity such as climbing stepladders; lifting or moving up to 50 pounds;
kneeling, standing, or walking for extended periods.


Expectations of Hours Worked


25 Hour work week minimum. The internship lasts 10 to 12 weeks.
