To keep South Dakota a great place to live, work and visit, our communities depend on having top-notch public safety professionals: it's the job of the Division of Criminal Investigation's Office of Law Enforcement Training (LET) to deliver these individuals to agencies across the state. This position is for a 911 Telecommunications/ Law Enforcement Training Coordinator, who will have a criticial role in developing South Dakota law enforcement officers and 911 telecommunicators, with an emphasis in managing the 911 telecommunicator program. This position is responsible for coordinating basic and advanced law enforcement/ telecommunicator training courses, with duties to include:
- providing instruction to basic and advanced students as needed, based on qualifications;
- recruiting and selecting instructors (adjunct, vendor or contractor);
- developing training schedules;
- providing course materials to students and instructors;
- ensuring classroom readiness;
- supervising student and instructor behavior in classroom and dormitory setting;
- enforcing student academic, disciplinary, and performance standards;
- developing lesson plans and other course materials;
- managing training resources and facilities;
- assessing the effectiveness of course materials and instructor delivery;
- maintaining course and student records - paper and electronic;
- establishing and maintaining a positive rapport with South Dakota law enforcement and public safety agencies.
In transparency, Law Enforcement Training is operating on a tentative hiring timeline, as detailed below. The dates and actions listed below are for situational awareness only and may be subject to change.
- Friday May 30, 2025: Hiring process closes.
- Friday June 6, 2025: Competitive and eligible candidates notified to schedule interviews.
- Week of June 9, 2025 or June 16, 2025: Competitive/ eligible candidates attend interview in Pierre. Virtual interview arrangements are possible.
- Week of June 9, 2025 or June 16, 2025: Candidate(s) selected for secondary hiring process phases.
- July 2025: Target start month for selected candidate.
Licenses and Certifications:
The applicant will be sponsored by Law Enforcement Training to attend any trainings or obtain certifications necessary to be proficient in training duties. Applicants who are or have been certified 911 telecommunicators or law enforcement officers in South Dakota or elsewhere are valued, however this is not a requirement.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Although not required skills for consideration, Law Enforcement Training would value an individual who possessed any of the below competencies:
- demonstrated success as a 911 telecommunicator;
- demonstrated ability to serve as an educator of adult learners;
- familiarity with National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) policies and protocols.
Knowledge of:
- basic 911 telecommunications/ law enforcement operations;
- adult learning techniques, principles and methods;
- effective use of training materials;
- Microsoft Office products and software.
Ability to:
- solve problems and resolve conflicts;
- providing instruction to basic and advanced students as needed, based on qualifications;
- communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
- build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
- prioritize, organize and manage multiple tasks;
- provide recommendations to correct student performance or behavioral issues;
- participate in intensive training up to 10 hours per day.
Skills:
- accomplish computer tasks, such as email, data entry, and Microsoft Office products;
- organized and detail oriented;
- experience with developing new curriculum, including developing learning objectives, lesson plans and evaluation tools;
- willingness to attend applicable training to better perform job duties;
- work well with others and be a team player.
This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
