Job Summary:

The Accountant II is a key contributor within the accounting team, responsible for executing both routine and complex accounting functions with precision and integrity. This role requires a strong foundation in accounting and finance, a proactive mindset, and the ability to operate effectively in a collaborative and fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate brings a passion for the mining and construction industry, a focus on accuracy and compliance, and a desire to grow through hands-on involvement in financial operations and process improvements. This position supports the delivery of timely, accurate, and meaningful financial information to drive informed business decisions.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • No direct reports; however, expected to provide peer-level guidance and training on accounting practices and financial processes.
  • May lead or support cross-functional initiatives requiring technical accounting input.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical Accounting and Compliance

  • Lead and manage the annual financial audit process, serving as the primary liaison with the external auditors, and ensure timely preparation, review, and delivery of all required audit schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Monitor and evaluate new accounting pronouncements; prepare technical accounting memos to document the company’s position and ensure compliance with applicable standards.
  • Provide technical accounting support on complex matters and ensure alignment with GAAP and internal policies.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of internal accounting policies and procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with sales and use tax obligations.
  • Oversee accounting for large construction projects and capital expenditures, including initial documentation, approvals, and ongoing tracking of fixed assets.
  • Ensure timely and accurate capitalization of assets in accordance with GAAP and company policy, including responsibility for the calculation, recording, and review of depreciation schedules.
  • Maintain the fixed asset subledger, reconcile asset records with the general ledger, and perform periodic reviews to identify impairments, disposals, or reclassifications.

  • Manage and apply appropriate depletion methodologies for mined land assets, ensuring accurate calculation, recording, and compliance with regulatory and internal accounting standards throughout the asset lifecycle.
  • Support the month-end close process through preparation of accruals, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
  • Execute ongoing and month-end invoicing and collections (Accounts Receivable) related to the Ready-Mix and Mountain businesses, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.

  • Support certain activities pertaining to the processing and accurate recording of the company payroll.
  • Prepare ad hoc reports, billing statements, and financial schedules as needed.
  • Train internal stakeholders on financial procedures, controls, and reporting standards.
  • Provide backup coverage for accounting team members during absences to maintain business continuity.
  • Participate in or lead special projects to improve accuracy, efficiency, or compliance in the accounting function.
  • Ensure adherence to all company policies and procedures.
  • Support other accounting and administrative tasks as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting.
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive accounting experience; mining, construction or project-based industry experience strongly preferred.

Work Environment & Requirements:

  • Based in-office at the Sioux Falls location

  • Work is performed in a well-lit, climate-controlled office setting.

  • Requires extended periods of computer use and sitting.

  • No significant physical demands beyond standard office activities.
