We are seeking an accountant to perform a wide variety of complex accounting functions for the Executive Management Finance Office (EMFO) in Pierre. This position will assist in the internal service fund rates analysis for the various internal service funds and assist with preparation of financial statements within the EMFO. Accountant level assignment will be determined by the education and experience of the incumbent. The Bureau of Finance and Management (BFM) is a vital component of the state's financial operations. Our small but industrious staff works in five divisions: Financial Reporting Office, Executive Management Finance Office, Financial Systems, Budget Analysis, and Internal Control.

This is a full-time position within EMFO, a division of the BFM of the State of South Dakota. BFM values service, excellence, communications, and stewardship. Payrate and accounting level classification will depend on experience and qualifications. Duties in the higher classification will be similar; however, project complexity and oversight may change. Additionally, if hired into the A2 classification, position will be hourly.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • For the A2 classification a 4-year Accounting Degree and 1-2 years of progressive experience equivalent to Level 1 of the Accounting Job Family.
  • For the A3 classification a 4-year Accounting Degree and 3-5 years of progressive experience equivalent to Level 2 of the Accounting Job Family OR a 4-year Accounting Degree and total of 4-7 years cumulative experience in accounting.
  • Experience in governmental accounting, master's degree in accounting, or CPA certification is beneficial, but not required.

Knowledge of:
  • Microsoft Excel, Word, Query, and other desktop tools;
  • governmental (fund) accounting;
  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);
  • Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) statements;
  • Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS) and Governmental Auditing Standards; and
  • governmental fiscal administrative processes.

Ability to:
  • communicate information clearly and concisely;
  • work within a team environment;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • pay close attention to details.
