The Department of Education is looking for a qualified individual to fill an Accounting Assistant position in the Accounting and Financial Reporting office. The ideal candidate would be dependable, organized, sensitive to deadlines, attentive to details, and customer driven.

The position duties include:
  • Process invoices and contract payments
  • Review invoices and payments for accuracy
  • W-9 maintenance
  • Process cash receipts
  • Process procurement cards
  • Scanning
  • Filing

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. The ability to work independently and take initiative as a self-starter. The confidence to ask questions when clarification is needed and seek solutions proactively. A willingness to assist staff members by answering questions and providing support when appropriate. Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Monitor and track payments, maintain accurate records, reports and other assigned items. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel. The ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment. A positive attitude, dependable work ethic, and commitment to teamwork. Basic accounting knowledge, bookkeeping experience, or related education is preferred.

Knowledge of:
  • bookkeeping practices sufficient to record debits and credits;
  • basic accounting and financial principles;
  • invoices and similar forms of documentation;
  • arithmetic sufficient to calculate percentages;
  • computer program applications and database management;
  • record keeping; and
  • state and federal codes, regulations, and related statutes.

Ability to:
  • follow directions such as code books, charts of accounts, and procedures;
  • use a calculator, computer, and computer software;
  • prioritize and complete work by established deadlines;
  • communicate sufficiently to answer questions and provide information about assigned work;
  • compare information and recognize discrepancies; and
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, departmental officials, and the public.

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
