Job Description

Department: Myrl & Roy’s
Reports to: Asphalt Foreman & Superintendent

Job Summary:
The primary responsibility of an Asphalt Paver Operator is to safely and efficiently operate a paving machine to spread and level hot mix paving material on highways, streets, parking lots, and driveways with the aid of stakes and level gauges to ensure hot mix is placed to proper grade and thickness.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Does not have any direct reports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Must comply with all company safety and environmental policies as well as local, state, and federal regulations (OSHA, MSHA, DOT, EPA, SDDENR)
• Display good communication skills, including the ability to understand and follow verbal and non-verbal directions and instructions.
• Performs daily equipment inspections and preventative maintenance
• Operate the paver and other heavy equipment in a safe and proper manner.
• Operates the paver controls to lower the screed auger, control the hopper, and navigate the direction of the paver.
• Align the paving machine into position when receiving asphalt by dump truck, and maintain a constant flow of hotmix into the hopper; ease the paver forward, safely pushing the dump truck along the paving surface.
• Observe distribution of materials along screed and control the direction of the screed to eliminate voids at curbs and joints.
• Line the paver appropriately to the work area, and ensure proper application of the hotmix, smoothing it evenly to the desired height, depth, and width.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and customers.
• Apply asphalt by raking, luting, and shoveling hot asphalt mix to the proper grade, thickness, and slope.
• All other duties assigned.

Education and Experience:
• High School diploma or GED

Physical Requirements:
• Ability to stand, squat, bend, and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to climb stairs and ladders.
• Ability to tolerate working outdoors in all temperatures and weather conditions.
• Ability to walk on uneven surfaces.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
