Job Description
Department: Myrl & Roy’s
Reports to: Asphalt Forman & Superintendent
Job Summary:
The primary responsibility of an Asphalt Screed Operator is to safely and efficiently operate the screed on the asphalt paving equipment to spread, level, and smooth asphalt to precise specifications, depth, and slope on highways, streets, parking lots, and driveways.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Does not have any direct reports.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Must comply with all company safety and environmental policies as well as local, state, and federal regulations (OSHA, MSHA, DOT, EPA, SDDENR)
- Display good communication skills, including the ability to understand and follow verbal and non-verbal directions and instructions.
- Performs daily equipment inspections and preventative maintenance
- Operates and controls the asphalt screed of the asphalt paver to lay asphalt to exact specifications for depth, slope, and crown.
- Understand adjustments and settings so that necessary changes can be made if needed to produce a quality mat finish.
- Calculate yields
- Assist with the job layout and have a thorough understanding of how the job is to be performed.
- Work with the paver operator to maintain a consistent head of material and adjust as needed.
- Assist with shoveling and cleaning up of the screed and paving machine.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and customers.
- Apply asphalt by raking, luting, and shoveling hot asphalt mix to the proper grade, thickness, and slope.
- All other duties assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent communication/interpersonal skills.

- Keen attention to detail.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to work safely in a team environment.
Education and Experience:
· High School diploma or GED
· Must have 2 or more years of screed operator experience.
Physical Requirements:
· Ability to stand, squat, bend, and walk for extended periods.
· Ability to climb stairs and ladders.
· Ability to tolerate working outdoors in all temperatures and weather conditions.
· Ability to walk on uneven surfaces.
· Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
