The Mental Health Supervisor position provides leadership, supervision, oversight, and vision for the mental health clinical program.

What you will do:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Planning, directing, and maintaining delivery of mental health services, assuring compliance with mental health guidelines, and managing appropriate use of resources.
- Coordinating with facility administration and staff, as well as with other clinical administrators, regarding the mental health needs of offenders; establishes treatment plans for the treatment in management of offenders with mental illness or mental problems, or other special needs populations.
- Provide training regarding mental health needs and issues; direct the management of psychiatric crises and or emergencies.
- Supervise, organize, review, and evaluate the work of staff for competency and efficiency; recommend hiring and corrective action of assigned staff with accurate, timely, and appropriate documentation.
- Maintain the standard of care compliance with all applicable mental health standards; interface between the mental health clinical program/unit and Clinical Services administration, other SD DOC facilities, and outside agencies.
- Facilitate communication to assure staff receives clear accurate and congruent information on a consistent basis; facilitates team building within the unit and between the clinical program or unit and other SD DOC staff.
- Responsible for payroll entry and solves problems for day to day mental health operations of assigned unit or program.
- Act as a consultant and provides training to facility, community, and state service providers on issues related to treating incarcerated offenders diagnosed with mental illness, or other special needs populations.
- Participate in formal and informal mental health evaluations, assess Psychiatric needs, group, individual therapy, and crisis intervention to include participation in the Mental Health On-Call rotation.
Qualifications:
- Applicant must possess a master's degree from an accredited institution in one of the following mental health fields: counseling, social work, psychology, or marriage and family therapy.
- Applicant must have a minimum of 1 year working in a supervisory capacity.
- Applicant must pursue status as an Addictions Counselor Trainee (ACT) within 60 days of hire if not already registered as a Licensed Addictions Counselor (LAC) or Certified Addictions Counselor (CAC) in this state of South Dakota.
Required Competencies:
- Advanced knowledge and a thorough understanding of Mental Health standards and guidelines;
- Ability to continuously expand knowledge base through continuing education of innovative clinical techniques and research;
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across facility programs and with external agencies;
- Strong leadership and analytical skills;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Ability to read and comprehend the English language;
- Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing;
- Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind;
- Ability to provide direct patient care to offenders;
- Must maintain required licensure.
Preferred Qualifications: - Supervisory experience over professional, behavioral health staff. Supervisory experience includes making decisions that affect the pay, status and tenure of subordinate employees;
- Clinical supervision and/or instruction over employees and/or interns to include guiding diagnostic assessments, review of treatment plans and measurement of treatment goals;
- Experience providing mental health treatment and discharge planning with the severely mentally ill and developmentally disabled population;
- Experience which includes leadership and oversight of a mental health program;
- Extensive licensed experience providing mental health treatment;
Conditions of Employment:
The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen and the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Individuals selected for the position will have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. If OC spray is carried, the staff carrying OC spay will be required to have direct (level 1) exposure during the training program. Individuals selected for the position must successfully complete a written and practical self-defense exam and successfully complete CPR to AHA guidelines - this includes successful completion of the practical/hands on portion as well as the written exam. Those selected for hire must possess the physical ability to successfully complete the practical self-defense exam, which involves the following:
- Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
- Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled takedown;
- Use arms, palms of hands, and feet to deliver blows;
- Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
- Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
- Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions.
Additionally, TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
OTHER: Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of the DOC basic training academy in its entirety, including Threat Pattern Recognition
