The South Dakota Office of Vital Records is seeking a Birth Registration Clerk to ensure the accurate and timely registration of all births occurring in South Dakota. This position plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of the state's birth records and acts as the primary liaison between hospital staff, midwives, and parents to facilitate the completion and filing of birth certificates in accordance with state and national guidelines.

Specific Duties Include:
  • coordinating with and providing technical support and guidance to hospital birth clerks, midwives and parents to gather accurate and complete birth data;
  • reviewing and verifying birth certificate worksheets and other documentation for completeness, accuracy and compliance with legal and procedural requirements;
  • development and implementation of training resources for individuals responsible for registration of birth data;
  • review and completion of amendments or corrections to birth certificates, including guiding customers through the process and verifying supporting documentation;
  • conducting quality assurance checks to ensure complete and accurate data.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • strong attention to detail and the ability to work with sensitive personal data with accuracy and discretion;
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • ability to understand and apply complex rules, policies and legal guidelines regarding vital records;
  • experience with data entry or working within an electronic records system is preferred;
  • the ability to make technical decisions and to work collaboratively with departments, industry and multiple stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
  • public health resources;
  • principles of practices and public administration;
  • applicable state and federals laws, rules and regulations;
  • general methods and processes in areas such as purchasing, budgeting, accounting and other administrative activities pertinent to government operations;
  • computer systems and applications.
