This position plays an important role in maintaining a safe, reliable, and welcoming environment at the Department of Health Workforce & Education Center. As the Building & Grounds Operations Manager, you'll use your hands-on skills across multiple trades to support daily operations and respond to maintenance needs in a specialized training facility used by both State staff and external partners.
You'll work alongside Buildings & Grounds staff-including trades, grounds, and custodial teams-to ensure building systems and equipment remain safe, efficient, and ready for use. Strong communication and customer service skills are essential, as this role supports a facility that serves a wide range of users.
What you'll do:
- Perform skilled building maintenance across multiple trades, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, refrigeration, heating and air conditioning, painting, locksmithing, and preventive maintenance
- Assist with general maintenance, repair, and minor snow removal as needed
- Support the operation and maintenance of facility systems and specialized equipment
- Work collaboratively with Buildings & Grounds staff and contractors to complete maintenance projects and resolve facility concerns
- Respond to building or equipment issues that require timely attention
- Maintain positive working relationships with internal teams, contractors, and facility users
- Participate in specialized training related to laboratory and facility maintenance as opportunities allow
This position is primarily based in an office-style facility but includes hands-on maintenance work indoors and outdoors. Occasional schedule flexibility may be required, including responding to facility needs outside regular business hours. Some minor snow removal responsibilities are included.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Experience working with specialty systems or equipment such as autoclave sterilizers, industrial dishwashers, large ovens, walk-in cold rooms, emergency power generators, security access controls, incinerators, or fire protection systems is beneficial.
Knowledge of:
- principles, practices, and procedures of general building operations and maintenance;
- record keeping procedures for maintenance tracking purposes;
- computer programs such as Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and web based applications;
- building automation systems (BAS) and other building/systems controls; and,
- day to day operations, such as managing BAS system, coordinating maintenance, scheduling contractor/vendor visits, etc.
Skill to:
- perform outstanding customer service.
Ability to:
- communicate information clearly and concisely to others;
- coordinate, organize and schedule, where needed;
- learn and manage complex building operations;
- monitor all building functions; and,
- work as a team to ensure continuity of operations.
