Building Maintenance Specialist maintains, repairs, and restores all aspects of buildings within State Parks and Recreation Areas in southeast South Dakota. The Building Maintenance Specialist works under the direction of the District Park Supervisor at Lewis & Clark Recreation Area. Serves as lead worker for the Building Maintenance Supervisor, Building Conservation Technician, and several seasonal and volunteer staff. Budgeting, planning and coordinating major building projects will be coordinated with the District Park Supervisors within the region.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid driver's license
Applicant will be a licensed electrician or plumber, or will have received technical training in carpentry, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Applicant needs to be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions. Applicant needs to be able to perform physical labor using a variety of machinery and equipment. Applicant needs to be able to repair and maintain a variety of facilities, machinery and equipment. Applicant will sometimes work in awkward positions, confined spaces, and around vehicle wiring and power takeoffs. Applicant will be exposed to fumes from exhausts, paints, and petroleum products; and unpleasant odors and bacteria around toilets, fish cleaning stations, and dead or diseased wildlife.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
The ability to maintain and repair electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems in the buildings of the Southeast Park Region. A working knowledge of heating and cooling units. Enough knowledge of the above to know when to fix something and when to hire professional help. Lead the day to day duties of other permanent and several seasonal and volunteer staff. Communicate with visitors, contractors, volunteers, and other staff well. Ability to research and learn updated construction methods, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
Knowledge of:
- local, state, and federal building codes;
- basic electrical systems and safety procedures for working with electricity;
- plumbing techniques: Ability to install plumbing, toilets, faucets, water lines, drain traps, etc. in the buildings; Knowledge on how to drain plumbing facilities in the fall and turn them back on in the spring;
- various HVAC systems;
- basic building procedures, the ability to read building plans and estimate material needs;
- knowledge of staff motivational techniques to keep seasonal, volunteer, and other staff on task;
- communication skills to solve conflicts with visitors, volunteers, and/or seasonal staff;
- purchasing processes such as ordering from contracts and contacting local vendors for bids;
- safe operating guidelines for equipment.
Skill to:
- communicate with all types of people under all types of conditions;
- read and understand blueprints; design building plans;
- utilize technology to plan and organize projects such as WorkZone and Cartegraph systems;
- motivate a crew of seasonal, volunteer, and permanent staff to complete assigned tasks;
- diagnose electrical issues, repair them, or find someone who can;
- diagnose plumbing issues, repair them, or find someone who can;
- diagnose HVAC issues, repair them, or find someone who can;
- diagnostic and repair for a variety of vehicles and equipment.
Ability to:
- provide on the job training to assigned employees and volunteers;
- plan and manage projects to keep them on time and meet deadlines;
- delegate work to others based on their capabilities;
- understand and follow instructions, compose required reports;
- communicate sufficiently to resolve conflicts with staff, volunteers, and the public;
- work outdoors in all kinds of weather;
- lift 50lbs. routinely;
- train subordinate staff on electrical, plumbing, and construction techniques.
