Certified Medical Assistant – Psychiatric Clinic

Location: Pierre, SD

Employment Category: Full-time or part-time

Employment Type: Hourly / Non-Exempt

Reports To: CEO

Position Description

Provides health care for individuals with mental illness by assessing needs and implementing appropriate nursing interventions of clients/patients, determining if a physician’s attention is necessary and following orders given by a physician/Certified Nurse Practitioner to ensure client/patient health care needs are met. Services provided in the community (client’s homes) and in the clinic setting, while adhering to the agency’s mission and values, and creating a culture of continuous improvement and teamwork.

Duties / Responsibilities:

Coordinates the Psychiatric Clinic operations to ensure proficiency and quality service is delivered

Engages with agency leadership team and other departments on promotion of continuity of care and operations

Manages contract physician/CNPs schedules and day-to-day needs

Manages psychiatric clinic referrals

Completes comprehensive client/patient assessment and creates and updates nursing care plans

Delivers services in client homes, community, office settings, or wherever necessary to best serve client

Attends specialty medical appointments when requested by the Care team

Provides medical education to clients when requested by the Care team

Supplements medical care for the clients when needed once referred from the Care team

Conducts group and individual activities appropriate to treatment plans

Responds to crisis situations compassionately and appropriately

Coordinates client care with other professionals and community partners

Delivers daily medication pass at the CARE Center as needed

Transports medications to the CARE Center daily as needed

Refills medications, prescriptions and administers injections

Administers medications and treatments as prescribed by a physician/CNP to ensure client/patient medical needs are addressed and side effects from medications and treatments are documented

Monitors client/patient response to medications and treatments and relays to the physician/CNP

Explains prescribed medications and treatments to clients/patients and Clinical Specialists and other staff as needed

Maintains and schedules biohazard destruction compliant with federal regulations

Maintains proper records for all medications within the facility according to state requirements

Manages the Health Home program

Provides basic medical care, determines if physician/CNP’s care is needed and necessary, and make arrangement for obtaining it

Provides input during treatment team meetings to develop a comprehensive treatment plan for each client/patient

Ensures compliance with all State, Federal and agency regulations, and standards

Other duties as assigned

Required Skills / Abilities:

Knowledgeable in current nursing theory and practice

Skills in crisis and emergency management

Ability to work as part of a team

Excellent computer skills/proficient in computer applications, specifically MS Office

Experience using MS TEAMS and ZOOM teleconferencing tools

Ability to multi-task and prioritize work

Problem solving skills

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

Strong organizational skills

Ability to meet deadlines

Possess a valid driver’s license

Education and Experience:

Graduate of a Medical Assistant program approved by the SD Board of Medical Examiners with an associate degree or technical degree preferred.

Certification of completion of a national certifying exam approved by the Board.

CPR/AED/BLS certification required

Prior Medical Assistant experience preferred

Physical Requirements:

Exposure to infectious diseases

Exposure to occupational dangers like accidental needle pricks

Requires long hours of standing and moving
