This is a full-time, exempt, 12-month postdoctoral fellowship providing advanced clinical training in Integrated Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH), rural healthcare, and substance use disorder treatment.

Position Overview
The fellowship is based within a high-volume family medicine residency clinic serving patients across the lifespan. The fellow will work alongside family medicine physicians, residents, pharmacists, nurses, care coordinators, and community partners to provide accessible, population-based behavioral healthcare within the primary care setting.
The fellowship offers advanced training in integrated behavioral health, rural healthcare delivery, substance use disorder treatment, perinatal mental health, and collaborative care. A particular emphasis is placed on preparing psychologists to address behavioral health needs in rural communities and integrating behavioral health services into primary care settings where specialty mental health resources may be limited.
Fellowship Training Areas
Integrated Primary Care Behavioral Health
Training includes:
- Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) model
- Brief functional assessments and interventions
- Same-day behavioral health consultations
- Population-based care
- Behavioral medicine interventions
- Health behavior change
- Chronic disease self-management
- Consultation and collaboration with medical providers
- Program development and quality improvement
Substance Use Disorder and Addiction Treatment
The fellow will gain specialized experience in:
- Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)
- Diagnosis and treatment of substance use disorders
- Motivational Interviewing
- Contingency Management
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for substance use disorders
- Relapse prevention planning
- Harm reduction approaches
- Integrated addiction treatment within primary care
Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD)
Training experiences include:
- Collaborative care for patients receiving buprenorphine treatment
- Behavioral interventions supporting MOUD adherence
- Recovery-oriented systems of care
- Management of co-occurring psychiatric conditions
- Interdisciplinary treatment planning
- Community resource coordination
- Rural opioid treatment models
Rural and Underserved Healthcare
The fellow will develop expertise in:
- Behavioral health integration in rural practice settings
- Telehealth services
- Workforce shortage solutions

- Care of underserved and vulnerable populations
- Community-based healthcare delivery
- Preparing primary care teams to address behavioral health needs in resource-limited settings
Clinical Responsibilities
The fellow will:
- Provide brief behavioral health interventions in primary care
- Conduct warm handoffs and same-day consultations
- Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning
- Deliver evidence-based treatment for depression, anxiety, trauma, chronic pain, insomnia, and substance use disorders
- Support patients receiving MOUD
- Consult with family medicine residents and faculty
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives
- Contribute to resident and medical student education
Supervision and Training
The fellowship includes:

Required Qualifications
- Doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-accredited program
- Completion of an APA-accredited internship prior to the fellowship start date
- Eligibility for psychologist licensure in South Dakota
- Strong interest in integrated primary care and interdisciplinary practice
