This role will provide administrative, research, and communication support to assist in timely and accurate handling of constituent inquiries. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering responsive and professional service.
Specific duties will include: - assist with tracking, investigating, and preparing responses to administrative correspondence, correspondence referrals from other sources and requests for public information;
- conduct initial research and gather background for responses;
- gather data and metrics for reports as needed;
- contribute to outreach efforts as needed;
- perform general administrative tasks and other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- federal and state laws, rules, and regulations applicable to assigned program activities;
- department policies and procedures;
- public administration as it relates to program activities assigned;
- principles and theories of program development, and the practices and procedures of implementation;
- legislative processes and deadlines, and rules promulgation procedures;
- principles of evidenced based practice in corrections;
Skill to:
- deescalate situations;
- show genuine concern and empathy.
Ability to:
- favorably present and promote departmental priorities, services, and actions internally and externally;
- interpret and comprehend agency goals and objectives, policies and procedures;
- gather, interpret, report, and use information concerning assigned activities;

- establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
Conditions of Employment: - successfully pass all modules of the South Dakota Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;
- lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
- stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
- use arms, palms of hands, and feet to deliver blows;
- withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
- rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
- get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;
- will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and may be exposed while on assignment;
- seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;
- demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;
- deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner;
- work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders;
- communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments;
- willing and able to travel;
- TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire;
- recognize deficiencies in and recommend changes to policies, operations memoranda and procedures.
