About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Construction Controller to oversee the financial operations of our growing subcontracting business. This role will be responsible for financial reporting, job costing, project profitability, cash flow, billing, collections, and accounting operations across multiple active construction projects.
The ideal candidate understands the unique financial demands of a subcontractor, including progress billing, retainage, change orders, certified payroll, subcontractor and vendor management, labor costing, project closeout, and contract compliance. This person will work closely with project managers, estimators, operations leadership, general contractors, and company ownership to ensure projects are financially controlled and profitable.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the company's day-to-day accounting and financial operations.
Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and month-end close.
Manage job-cost accounting by project, including labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and overhead.
Monitor project budgets, committed costs, actual costs, gross margins, and cost-to-complete forecasts..
Oversee progress billing, pay applications, retainage, collections, and accounts receivable.
Review contracts, purchase orders, change orders, and billing requirements to ensure accurate and timely invoicing.
Track approved and pending change orders and their financial impact on projects.
Work closely with project managers to identify cost overruns, margin changes, billing issues, and potential financial risks.
Monitor cash flow and prepare short- and long-term cash-flow forecasts.
Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports for company ownership.
Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with significant construction experience preferred.
Experience working for a construction company is strongly preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
CPA or CMA designation preferred.
Experience in [electrical / mechanical / HVAC / plumbing / concrete / drywall / roofing / specialty trade] contracting.
Experience supporting a bonding program and working with sureties.
Experience managing an accounting team.
Knowledge of prevailing wage, certified payroll, or public-works requirements.
Experience with ERP, construction-management, and project-management software.
Strong understanding of construction contract terms and payment procedures.
