The Parole Board Administration Office provides administrative support to a nine-member appointed board for a variety of parole and clemency matters. This position interacts directly with agency staff, the public, offenders and parolees throughout parole processes.
Duties Include: - Providing primary administrative support for the parole revocation and dispositional hearing processes, to include:
- Computing and verifying dates on offenders received into Department of Corrections facilities on parole violations
- Reviewing court records systems to determine current sentences and/or pending charges
- Providing information on sentencing laws, offenders' discharge dates and lengths and structure of sentences
- Preparing investigative summary sheets, violation packets, and legal findings for offenders
- Attending and assisting with dispositional hearings, which includes monthly travel to the South Dakota Women's Prison in Pierre
- Providing primary administrative support for the contested hearing processes, to include:
- Coordinating the schedule of cases and contacting agency witnesses
- Preparing case notes and assembling the case files for review by the Parole Board
- Leading administrative questioning during the hearings upon request
- Attending and assisting with contested hearings during special session
- Managing a caseload of approximately 15-30 out-of-state detainees housed in other state and federal facilities
- Serving legal papers to offenders inside the Department of Corrections facilities
- Assisting with warrant processes
- Interpreting and applying policies and procedures on a case-by-case basis to ensure offenders and parolees are moved in and out of the correctional system legally and equitably
- Performing administrative functions to ensure parole program operations function consistently and efficiently
The Ideal Candidate Will Have: - a good understanding of the state correctional system.
Licenses and Certifications: - Applicant will be required to successfully obtain NCIC certification.
Knowledge of: - Laws and Government - Federal and state laws, administrative rules and regulations, court procedures, precedents, and executive orders applicable to parole and clemency programs;
- Policy - Department of Corrections and Board of Pardons and Paroles policies and procedures;
- Corrections - Principles of evidenced based practices in corrections; and
- Technology - Utilize computerized data systems.
