Codington County is seeking dedicated, professional individuals to join our law enforcement team as County Deputy Sheriffs. What You'll Do
- Patrol assigned areas to enforce state and local laws
- Respond to emergency calls and investigate criminal activity
- Make arrests and issue citations when appropriate
- Investigate domestic violence, disturbances, and suspicious incidents
- Serve civil and criminal warrants, subpoenas, summonses, and court documents
- Transport prisoners to courts, correctional facilities, and medical appointments
- Maintain courtroom security and assist with court operations
- Testify in court proceedings
- Assist with traffic control during accidents, community events, and emergencies
- Support dispatch and communications operations as needed
- Complete accurate reports and maintain detailed records
- Respond to emergency call-outs when required
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Valid driver's license
- Valid South Dakota Law Enforcement Certification or ability to obtain certification through the South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy within 12 months of hire
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Sound judgment and decision-making abilities
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations
- Commitment to ethical law enforcement and community service
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to:
- Lift and move up to your own body weight when necessary
- Stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, crouch, and perform physically demanding activities
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs
- Perform duties while wearing required personal protective equipment
