County Manager Assistant

Hughes County | Part-Time | Approximately 20 Hours per Week
Pay Range: $22.50–$24.50 per Hour Depending on Experience

Hughes County is seeking a dependable, organized, and professional County Manager Assistant to provide support for the County's Care of the Poor/Indigent Relief Program and the County Manager.

This position is responsible for evaluating and processing applications for County assistance, maintaining confidential records, coordinating with state and local agencies, and assisting individuals in accessing available community resources. The position also provides administrative support for County Commission meetings, including preparing claims and vouchers, preparing agendas and meeting packets, recording minutes, maintaining official records, and updating designated County website content.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer the County's Care of the Poor/Indigent Relief Program in accordance with applicable South Dakota law and County policies.
  • Meet with individuals requesting assistance, evaluate eligibility, process claims, and provide appropriate referrals to community and government resources.
  • Process vouchers, invoices, reimbursements, and related financial documentation.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential paper and electronic records.
  • Prepare County Commission agendas, meeting packets, minutes, and related documents.
  • Assist with workers' compensation, and other assigned administrative functions.
  • Maintain and update designated County website content and electronic records.
  • Research available state, federal, nonprofit, and community resources.
  • Provide professional assistance to County officials, employees, agencies, and members of the public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license and proof of personal automobile insurance.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive information professionally.
  • Proficiency with computers and standard office software.

Preferred:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Social Work, Human Services, Accounting, or a related field.
  • One to three years of administrative, clerical, county/municipal government, medical records management, bookkeeping, human services, or related experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, databases, electronic records, bookkeeping, medical records management, or public assistance programs.
