Seeking qualified applicants for a Custodial Supervisor role. This position is a full-time position at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice South Dakota Veterans Home and requires a dedication and commitment to "Caring for America's Heroes". The Custodial Supervisor is a key role within the Physical Plant Department and is responsible for directing the work of a team of facility workers. Incumbents both supervise and assist in the cleaning and general maintenance of the facility to maintain sanitary conditions and enhance the appearance of the buildings.

Supervisory duties include, but are not limited to:
  • conducting interviews;
  • providing training and work direction;
  • reviewing and approving all timekeeping for direct staff;
  • addressing staff issues and concerns, fairly;
  • conducting performance appraisals and documents;
  • monitoring equipment and recommending replacement when needed.
  • reporting maintenance problems and/or hazardous conditions; and,
  • determining need and developing in-service training programs for staff to ensure continuous training in custodial, routine maintenance, repair, and supervision techniques.

Hazards facing this role are slipping on wet floors, falling from ladders, possible back strain from lifting heavy trash and furniture, and exposure to chemicals used to clean and disinfect. Incumbents work around residents who can become hostile or violent. Responsibilities require standing, bending, and reaching for long periods of time.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Knowledge of:

  • techniques of custodial work; and
  • proper use of cleaning equipment and supplies.

Ability to:

  • establish and maintain effective supervisory relationships;
  • plan and schedule work;
  • operate and repair cleaning equipment;
  • keep records;
  • train and teach subordinates proper techniques of custodial work;
  • direct the activities of subordinates; and,
  • lift up to 50 lbs.
