Position Title: Custodian – County Facilities
Department: Buildings and Grounds
Reports To: Buildings & Grounds Supervisor and Yankton County Commissioners
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Grade: 3 to 14 (per matrix)
Probationary Period: 180 Days
Employment Type: Full-Time (40 hours/week)
Schedule: Evening/Night Shifts (Choose from multiple 8-hour shifts between 4:00 PM and 8:00 AM)
Starting Pay: $18.80/hour DOE
Location: Yankton County, South Dakota
Position Summary
Maintain cleanliness, safety, and general upkeep of Yankton County facilities and grounds, including the Government Center, EMS Facility, Safety Center, and other locations as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Custodial Duties
- Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors
- Empty trash and recycling bins
- Clean and sanitize restrooms
- Dust and wipe down surfaces, furniture, and fixtures
- Clean windows, doors, and glass partitions
- Refill restroom supplies (soap, paper towels, toilet paper)
- Perform deep cleaning tasks (e.g., carpet shampooing, floor waxing)
- Monitor and maintain custodial inventory
- Schedule and perform cleaning and maintenance independently
Seasonal & Special Tasks
- Assist with snow removal (shoveling, salting walkways)
- Perform yard work (raking, weeding, light landscaping)
- Support special cleaning projects and event prep/cleanup
- Travel between county buildings as needed
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise own work
Oversee activities of outside contractors in coordination with supervisor
All work must be completed before 8:00 AM
Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- High school diploma or GED (preferred)
- Basic plumbing and electrical knowledge (preferred but not required)
- Ability to work independently and follow a cleaning schedule
- Must pass a background check
- Valid driver’s license (preferred)
- Must be able to work flexible hours as needed
- Must be able to work outside in various weather conditions
