Directs security operations for a correctional institution to ensure correctional staff understand and are implementing institutional policies and procedures that ensure safety and security of employees and inmates. This position also maintains security and order through daily supervision and management of captains, lieutenants, sergeants, and unit staff to include Housing Captains and Sergeants.

Duties will include:
  • manages staff and inmate activities relating to security operations for an assigned area of a correctional institution.
  • assist with staff and inmate investigations.
  • develops and oversees implementation of disaster deployments.
  • oversee operations of the inmate housing units to include daily inmate activity and staff assigned to work in those areas. This includes both security staff and the unit management team.
  • directs security for school, health services, and mail room.
  • performs administrative duties as a member of the senior staff of the institution; is the liaison between senior staff and correctional staff; and is the contact person in the absence of the associate warden.
  • attends meetings with senior staff and provides information and input into development and implementation of policies and operational procedures.
  • participates in development of institutional budgets.
  • fills in for senior staff to provide coverage of the facility.
  • conducts security audits.
  • interviews and selects staff.
  • provides training and work direction.
  • conducts performance reviews and completes performance documents.
  • participates in the Duty Officer on-call rotation.
  • oversees scheduling to ensure compliance with institutional guidelines.
  • performs other work as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, Corrections, or a related field;
  • minimum of 7 years of experience in corrections, with 5 years in a supervisory or leadership role;
  • knowledge of human resources principles, procedures, and systems sufficient to manage and maintain a harmonious labor relations environment in accordance with state policy/procedure and affirmative action/equal opportunity policies;
  • excellent written and oral communication skills to relay sensitive information to staff, the public, law enforcement agencies, attorneys, offenders, and other state agencies and to elicit cooperation from staff and offenders to resolve difficult and potentially dangerous situations affecting the safety and security of offenders, staff, and the public;
  • human relations and conflict resolution skills sufficient to effectively solve problems in a manner that is sensitive to organizational structures, cultures, as well as the needs of groups and individuals; and to elicit cooperation from staff and offenders to resolve difficult and potentially dangerous situations affecting the safety and security of offenders, staff, and the public;
  • strong understanding of correctional facility operations and regulations;
  • demonstrated ability to make sound decisions under pressure and in emergency situations.

A combination of education (Criminal Justice, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or similarly related field) and experience as defined above equal to seven (7) years.

Knowledge of:
  • methods, procedures, and practices of controlling and supervising inmates confined to a
  • correctional institution;
  • modern management principles and practices, particularly those related to personnel;
  • investigative methods and techniques;
  • custody and security requirements and resources needed to provide them;
  • effective methods of supervision and communication;
  • appropriate use of physical force.

Ability to:
  • supervise all operations and programs of a correctional institution;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, subordinate
  • employees, and representatives of public and private agencies;
  • effectively analyze situations and exercise judgment and discretion in establishing,
  • applying, and interpreting departmental policies and procedures;
  • resolve systems problems and organizational conflicts;
  • conduct investigations and evaluate findings;
  • remain calm during stressful situations and react quickly in emergencies;
  • operate, train others, and supervise the employment of firearms, mechanical restraints, and chemical agents..

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
