D & I Railroad General Manager
Job Description

Reports to: Midwest Region President
Job Summary:
The D & I Railroad General Manager serves as the strategic and operational leader of the D & I Railroad. You will oversee every aspect of railroad operations, including train performance, customer service, regulatory compliance, and financial results, all while guiding your team with a vision. Your leadership will directly influence the organization's culture, drive operational excellence, strengthen customer relationships, and organization growth.

- Mechanical Department Manager
- Area Transload Manager for Sioux City, Hawarden Cement, Harrisburg Sand
Locations:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Establish and oversee long-term strategic planning for the railroad, transloading operations, and property assets.
- Develop and execute business strategies to drive revenue growth, market expansion, and profitability.
- Manage the overall profit and loss, ensuring cost-effective operations and maximizing asset utilization.
- Provide strong leadership and effective management to:
- Develop a team of highly motivated and skilled operational managers.
- Encourage teamwork towards achieving the company’s goal.
Build and maintain employee morale. - Oversee all rail operations, including:
- Transportation services
- Track Maintenance and infrastructure.
- Rolling stock utilization
- Crew management and scheduling.
- Coordinate with production and sales for efficient transfer of intercompany materials to transload locations.
- Develop service plans and customer rail solutions to optimize throughput and asset utilization.
- Coordinate interchange activity with connection class 1 or regional railroads.
- Foster a strong company culture focused on safety, integrity, accountability, and empowerment.
- Work with State Departments of Transportation and industry groups such as the American Shortline and Regional Railroad Associations (ASLRRA) to lobby for favorable policies.
- Secure federal and state grants for track rehabilitation and infrastructure modernization.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for production, safety, financial, and sustainability.
- Ensure ethical business practices and strong corporate governance.
Follows and ensures compliance with all company safety and environmental policies and all federal regulations (OSHA, MSHA, FRA, EPA, DOT, and SDDANR, IADENR). - Build and maintain positive working relationships with team members, managers, contractors, and vendors.

Required Skills/Abilities:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in the rail industry.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
