The South Dakota Department of Education seeks a leader to provide vision, direction, and support to its 12-member Leadership Team and staff of approximately 180. The department oversees aspects of K-12 education, including accrediting schools, certifying educators, implementing federal programs, collecting relevant data, and more. The department encompasses the State Library and State Historical Society and their work to support lifelong learning.

The Deputy Secretary reports directly to the Secretary of Education. The role requires an ability to adapt to changing environments; strong communication, management, and organizational skills; and the capacity to practice tact in interactions with others.

WHAT DOES THE DEPUTY SECRETARY DO?
This position is responsible for:
  • Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the agency;
  • Supervising personnel and managing budgets to ensure agency objectives are met;
  • Evaluating, recommending, and directing activities to ensure effective implementation of policies and programs;
  • Organizing the efforts of the agency's Legislative Team;
  • Coordinating official department communications that are clear, consistent, and credible;
  • Developing and maintaining positive relationships with partner-agencies, constituents, and stakeholders;
  • Serving as a liaison with the media;
  • Working collaboratively across divisions to streamline efforts.

A bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field is required.
