Job Description

The Diesel Repair Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel-powered vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation. This role supports operational uptime by performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical issues, and completing repairs in a timely and accurate manner. The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and committed to safety and continuous improvement.

Essential Duties

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, and hydraulic components
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance including oil changes, filter replacements, and system checks
  • Use diagnostic tools and software to identify mechanical and electrical issues
  • Complete work orders accurately, including documenting repairs, parts used, and time spent
  • Conduct safety inspections to ensure compliance with company and regulatory standards
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work area in a clean and organized condition
  • Communicate repair status and recommendations clearly with supervisors and team members
  • Follow all OSHA safety guidelines and company safety policies
  • Assist with emergency repairs to minimize equipment downtime
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of diesel engine systems and mechanical components
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose complex mechanical issues
  • Familiarity with diagnostic tools, hand tools, and shop equipment
  • Basic knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals and technical diagrams
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality work
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Diesel technician certification preferred (e.g., ASE Diesel Certification)
  • 1–3+ years of experience in diesel repair or heavy equipment maintenance
  • Valid driver’s license required (CDL preferred but not required)
  • Ability to pass pre-employment background check and drug screening (if applicable)
