Job Description
The SD Board of Regents is seeking a Director of Research & Economic Development to champion innovation, expand research capacity, and accelerate drive economic development across South Dakota’s six public universities. This high-impact leadership role offers a unique opportunity to shape South Dakota’s future by advancing the South Dakota Science and Technology Plan, fostering public-private partnerships, and driving the creation of high-quality jobs through research excellence and technology commercialization.
What You’ll Do
- Serve as a strategic advisor and collaborator with the Board of Regents, the Research Affairs Council (RAC), the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED), and key stakeholders across government, academia, and industry.
- Lead initiatives that grow South Dakota’s research enterprise, support innovation ecosystems, and translate academic research into real-world economic outcomes.
- Promote the development of new companies and workforce opportunities through commercialization and entrepreneurship.

Job Requirements
What We’re Looking For
An advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a relevant field.
-Varying levels of education and experience may be acceptable to the hiring authority.
Proven leadership in research administration, innovation strategy, or economic development.
A strong track record of securing and managing research funding.
Deep understanding of commercialization, public–private partnerships, and workforce development.
Exceptional communication, collaboration, and strategic planning skills.
