The Oahe Downstream Recreation Area park district is made up of multiple park areas in Stanley, Sully and Hughes counties in central SD. Major park areas include: Oahe Downstream Recreation Area - a beautiful park located below the Oahe dam at the headwaters of Lake Sharpe. The area boasts a large campground, camping cabins and other lodging facilities. The recreation area offers numerous amenities boat ramp facilities (gun range, archery range, off-highway vehicle area, 18 basket disc golf course and others); Spring Creek Creek Recreation Area - diverse recreation area that offers modern lodging, full service 55-slip marina, concessionaire-operated restaurant and c-store on Lake Oahe; Cow Creek Recreation Area - moderate sized camping destination with world-class fishing. The park offers 46 campsites, some with a group camping aspect, 4 camping cabins and a very busy boat ramp; Okobojo Point Recreation Area - a beautiful, peaceful, first-come-first-serve camping destination with a group camping aspect. The area boast 18 campsites that can accommodate multiple camping units and offers a camping opportunity unlike others often found in campground settings. In addition, this supervisor also oversees a number of public water access areas on Lake Oahe that offer both boat ramps, docks, fish cleaning facilities and some primitive camping.

The District Park Supervisor will direct and/or oversee the work of all district permanent staff, a team of seasonal employees and on-site volunteers; they will implement administrative directives and standard operating procedures such as interviewing, recommending for hire, training seasonal employees and volunteers; plan and assist with programming, special events and site interpretation at the various locations throughout the district; preparing and prioritizing an annual work plan for maintenance, operations, and conservation of the parks natural resources including long-range capital development projects; maintaining park facilities at maximum efficiency; performing administrative tasks to meet customer needs and expectations; and provide public and staff safety.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver license is required.
  • Pesticide applicators permit issued by the SDDANR would be beneficial.


The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
The ability to manage a large park district operation utilizing interpersonal communication skills to be able to build/maintain relationships with staff, visitors and various special interest groups that are connected to the numerous park locations. Organizational skills and an understanding of standard business practices in operating campground resources. Experience in Point of Sale applications, natural resource management, building maintenance, programming and special event coordination would be very critical to the success of this district park opportunity. The candidate must possess a degree in a related field such as park management, business, and/or natural resources.

  • implement policies and procedures to assure safe, efficient operations;
  • maintain, conserve and care for the long-term preservation of the various parks and natural resources;
  • use applicable social media outlets to promote the parks and programming opportunities;
  • develop and manage special events.


Ability to:

  • communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • perform duties and responsibilities independently within established policies and procedures;
  • provide work direction to permanent and seasonal staff and volunteers;
  • oversee recruitment and training; and
  • perform administrative tasks such as keeping accurate records, POS oversight, auditing others' records, writing local contracts for services and buying supplies.

This position will navigate and communicate with the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service as well as a number of stakeholders that provide insight and assistance to manage a number of facilities.

The District Park Supervisor works in a typical office environment and outdoors in all types of weather conditions as work and projects dictate.

Additional Requirements: To be considered, please attach your resume and references. Include supervisory experience including the type and number of employees supervised.
