The South Dakota Department of Social Services, Division of Medical Services also knowns as South Dakota Medicaid plays a vital role in the healthcare of many South Dakotans. The program is one of the largest healthcare insurers in South Dakota and serves over 140,000 low-income individuals, individuals with physical or developmental disabilities, and family caretakers.

This Division Support Assistant will play a vital role in supporting the Medicaid senior leadership team with a range of special projects including Rural Health Transformation and execution of Medicaid initiatives. Duties of this position include:

  • Assist senior division leadership with implementing special projects or other strategic initiatives.
  • Coordinate updates and maintains division documentation of milestones, pathways and goals associated with its strategic plan in the AchieveIT software.
  • Coordinate logistics and schedules meetings for Medicaid initiatives, which include both internal meetings as well as workgroup or advisory meetings involving external stakeholders, public officials, etc.
  • Create meeting agendas, take notes and publish minutes; Effectuate discussion into concrete action items and follow up on meeting take aways.
  • Handles correspondence and responds to inquiries from constituents, state officials and other departmental units.
  • Prepares meeting and presentation materials for Medicaid Director and Chief Medical Officer.
  • Researches, reviews, and drafts various communications and reports for the Medicaid Director and Chief Medical Officer.
  • Creates and maintains division internal documents including onboarding materials or other reference documents used by divisional staff.
  • Organizes and maintains file structure for archival of division documentation.
  • Manages all aspects of the Medicaid Director's daily calendar and travel needs, ensuring Directors have prep materials and are able to effectively transition between appointments, and that travel details are confirmed/authorized.
  • Coordinates staff engagement initiatives and activities.
  • Responds to requests or questions regarding program operations, disseminates information and provides assistance.
  • Compiles information, statistics or other data in order to prepare reports, monitor deadlines Follows-up with appropriate staff to ensure execution of plans, and completion of program tasks and actions required to advance projects.
  • Communicates and problem-solves to foster professional interpersonal relationships between the Medicaid Director, division staff, state agencies, and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Advises the Medicaid Director and senior staff of operational and policy concerns.
  • Prepares forms, registrations or other administrative documents requested.
  • Uses sound judgment and knowledge of department policy, and state and federal law in prioritizing and preparing responses.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by senior division leadership.


Licenses and Certifications:

Bachelor's degree preferred.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
