Department: Driver Trainer Coordinator
Reports to: VP Construction Materials
Job Summary:
The Driver Training Coordinator is responsible for instructing, coaching, and mentoring new and current drivers on safe driving practices, Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and company policies. This role ensures drivers are well-prepared to operate commercial vehicles safely and efficiently, supporting training and operational goals.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- No direct reports
- Follow all company safety and environmental policies and all federal regulations (OSHA, MSHA, FRA, EPA, DOT, SDDANR, IADENR).
- Provide hands-on, in-cab training for new and existing drivers with a focus on safety, compliance, and efficiency.
- Organize, instruct, and help all Early Entry Drivers to pass the written and driving CDL tests.
- Instruct trainees in proper vehicle inspection procedures, defensive driving, hours of service (HOS), logbook use (ELDs), load securement, backing, and coupling/uncoupling techniques.
- Assess driver performance during road tests and professionally deliver constructive feedback.
- Conduct classroom training sessions on DOT regulations, company safety policies, and operational procedures.
- Maintain accurate training records, including evaluations, test results, and certifications.
- Ensure trainees understand and comply with all federal, state, and local commercial driving regulations.
- Collaborate with Safety and Operations teams to address and resolve performance or safety concerns.
- Assist in the development and improvement of training materials and programs.
- Stay updated on transportation laws and industry best practices.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Required Skills/Abilities:
High school diploma or GED required.
Valid CDL Class A license with a clean driving record.
Minimum 3–5 years of recent, verifiable experience operating a commercial vehicle.
Prior experience as a driver trainer or instructor preferred.
In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations and FMCSA standards.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours and travel as needed.
- Patience and ability to coach and train drivers of varying experience levels.
