This is a Full-Time 40 Hours Weekly position with the Department of Social Services - Division of Economic Assistance. For more information on the Department of Social Services - Division of Economic Assistance, please visit https://dss.sd.gov/ .

This position directs the operations of Economic Assistance programs by monitoring and evaluating program delivery to ensure that services are provided to customers. Provides direct supervision and staff development to support staff and Economic Assistance Benefits Specialists who assesses and analyzes current life circumstances and financial capabilities to provide assistance and services to low income individuals and their families by interviewing, counseling, and identifying available resources; obtaining records, verifying collateral information and determining eligibility for multiple social service programs; respond to public inquiries regarding social services and benefits; and interpreting rules, regulations, and policies to ensure appropriate benefits and services are provided in an effective and expedient manner to assist in the individual's basic self-sufficiency.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Bachelor's degree in social science, behavioral science, human service related fields, business administration, public administration, education, or public health and/or experience in health care administration, finance, accounting, or insurance is preferred. Entry level knowledge and abilities may be acquired through any combination of training and/or experience that will enable the incumbent to possess the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge of:
  • principles, practices and methods of social programs.
  • various social, cultural, economic, psychological and emotional factors influencing the behavior and attitudes of families and individuals (preferred but not required);
  • supervisory principles and practices (preferred but not required).

Ability to:
  • establish, build and maintain cooperative and productive relationships internally and externally; demonstrate compassion, respect, courtesy, and tact when interacting with others;
  • gather and analyze data, identify and define problems or potential problems; and develop and implement appropriate resolutions;
  • recognize individual strengths and weakness; build, lead and motivate teams that are committed to a common goal;
  • make difficult decisions and assume accountability for actions and results;
  • communicate information clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing; and to keep appropriate parties informed;
  • adjust and adapt to changing policies and procedures;
  • utilize computerized data system;
  • establish workloads, deadlines, and performance objectives; and follow-up to ensure proper completion of outcomes and expectations (preferred but not required).
  • commitment to leadership and supervision based on the mission statement and guiding principles established by the Department of Social Services Strategic Plan.
