EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT - GENERAL INSTRUCTIONAL

Employment Term: 9 months, 6.5 – 7 hours per day

$13.55 per hour starting wage, increase based on applicable work experience

The job of Education Assistant - General Instructional is done for the purpose/s of assisting a certificated teacher in the supervision and instruction of individual and/or small groups of students; and providing instructional and clerical support to teacher/s and staff.  

This job reports to the Elementary Principal.

Essential Functions

  1.  
    1. Attends meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
    2. Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g. read stories, listen to students read, providing writing assistance, reinforce English lessons, provide spelling practice, facilitate activities, computer learning programs, etc.) for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching their academic goals and grade level standards.
    3. Implements instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of assisting the teacher in improving students' academic success through a defined course of study.
    4. Maintains classroom equipment, work area, student files/records (e.g. adapting instructional materials, maintaining organized work area, taking attendance, checking homework, grading papers, lunch counts, emergency cards, audio visual equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and/or providing reliable information.
    5. Modifies classroom work/homework for the purpose of providing a method to support and/or reinforce academic objectives.
    6. Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, playground, lunch room, library, etc.) for the purpose of enforcing school rules and procedures and/or providing a safe and positive learning environment.
    7. Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. copying, decorate classroom, collect/distribute supplies, make displays/bulletin boards/phone calls, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher and/or providing necessary records/materials.
    8. Promotes good habits for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcome and encouraging student development.
    9. Substitutes for teachers and/or office staff as needed for the purpose of maintaining consistent student service and education in the absence of other staff members.
    10. Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

REQUIREMENTS:

Experience:     Job related experience is desired.
Education:       High School diploma or equivalent.
Certificates:     48 college units, or an AA degree, or be able to demonstrate college level skills by passing the Para proficiency test.
Clearances:     Employment is contingent upon a Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance, paid for by the applicant.
