Job Summary:

If you are committed to helping people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities (ID/DD), this may be an opportunity for you. This position will allow you to make a difference and continue the growth and development of services supporting people to lead healthy, independent, and productive lives in communities throughout South Dakota.

The Eligibility Specialist works directly with individuals and/or families to provide an overview of the services and supports that are available through the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD). The Eligibility Specialist's role is to gather information to help connect individuals and/or families with the services and supports that best meet their needs. Often the Eligibility Specialist is the first point of contact which requires active listening and compassion in all interactions. This position assists individuals and/or families with navigating the application and eligibility process. The Eligibility Specialist completes assessments and gathers the information that is needed to determination eligibility for DDD services. The Eligibility Specialist also works with community service providers for referrals and to provide education about services. The ideal candidate will have experience supporting individuals with ID/DD, knowledge of supports and services, and enjoys helping others to be successful.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, public health, or other human service-related field.

Knowledge of:
  • disability practices;
  • person centered practices;
  • services and supports for for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities;
  • people first language
  • applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations pertaining to intellectual/developmental disabilities.

Ability to:
  • establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships and demonstrate compassion, respect, courtesy and tact when interacting with others;
  • work efficiently with other staff and community organizations;
  • communicate information effectively and accurately;
  • interpret and implement state and federal rules and regulations pertaining to intellectual/developmental disabilities;
  • gather and analyze data and make suggestions to improve policies and procedures;
  • exercise sound judgement in the performance of assigned responsibilities;
  • prepare clear and concise documentation, reports and correspondence;
  • effectively plan and organize work activities, adjust to multiple demands and prioritize tasks to complete assignments and meet schedules and deadlines;
  • assume initiative and direction with minimal supervision;
  • adapt to change as services and process to best support individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities and/or their families continue to evolve.
