The SD DOT is seeking a motivated individual of junior, senior, or graduate level status working towards a B.S. in Civil or Geological Engineering that is interested in an opportunity for an educational scholarship and intern position that would transition into permanent employment with the SD DOT following graduation.

As a assistant geotechnical engineer with the South Dakota Department of Transportation, you will provide geotechnical design information and construction support for transportation projects throughout the state.

In the role of intern, you will learn from the Department's geotechnical staff how geology affects transportation facilities throughout the state.

If you are a junior, you will work as an intern prior to your senior year. Upon completion of the internship, and after transitioning to a full-time Assistant Geotechnical Engineer, you will be responsible for providing geotechnical recommendations for projects throughout the entire state. Responsibilities include assisting the Foundation, Geology, and Soils Sections with the collection of subsurface information, laboratory analysis, and design recommendations for structural foundations, soil embankments, subgrades, slope stability, and geologic studies.

A typical 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, can be expected; although, hours may vary depending on workload. Work activity will predominately be an office environment with travel for site inspections and construction support periodically. Statewide overnight travel with drill crews will occasionally be required to obtain a working knowledge of subsurface exploration methods and techniques.

Licenses and Certifications:
This internship and the subsequent full-time employment will provide a great opportunity and experience for the individual to work towards obtaining Engineering In Training (FE) Status and Professional Engineer License.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Applicants in their junior, senior, or graduate level status pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil or Geological Engineering with an emphasis in geotechnical engineering are preferred. Coursework in geotechnical engineering, physical geology, and groundwater would be beneficial. Applicants who have intern experience with the SDDOT will be given preference.

The total compensation of Hourly Wage + State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Assistant Geotechnical Engineer is approximately $82,790.00 annually.

Knowledge of:
  • geotechnical engineering principles (soil mechanics, groundwater, etc.);
  • South Dakota geology;
  • geotechnical subsurface investigation techniques;
  • operate computers and use various software.

Skill to:
  • communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
  • manage multiple projects concurrently.

Ability to:
  • effectively plan, prioritize, and organize work to meet schedules and deadlines;
  • prepare, interpret, and use engineering plans, maps, specifications, and technical reports;
  • read and interpret state and federal laws and rules and department standards, policies, and procedures;
  • organize, analyze, calculate, and evaluate available information and draw upon reasonable conclusions;
  • provide work direction.
