Department: Engineering Position: Engineering Technician Status: Full-Time FLSA: Exempt

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Under general supervision of the City Engineer and Utilities Manager, performs technical and inspection work of a basic engineering nature and CAD. Assists in all phases of construction inspection, supervision of surveying, and CAD operations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:

Works under the direction of the City Engineer. Works in conjunction with Utilities Manager and GIS Technician.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Preliminary surveying and staking for all types of construction.
  • Construction inspection and supervision of all contractors for City awarded projects.
  • Responsible for the fieldwork for water lines, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, electric lines, streets, curb and gutter, sidewalks, landfill, recycling center, and City buildings.
  • Staking of sidewalks, streets, water lines, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, setting lines and grades for sidewalks or other flat work, and setting grades and lines for other City departments.
  • Under general supervision, draws plans for small-scale public facilities, streets, storm sewers, curb and gutter, water, sewer, electric, sidewalks, and City projects of a similar nature using AutoCad maps.
  • Perform quantity take-offs from construction plans.
  • Assist updating AutoCad maps.
  • Maintain AutoCad maps.
  • Measuring and computing of contract quantities and assisting the City Engineer and Utilities Manager in preparing estimates for payment and assessment rolls.
  • Prepare assessments, inspect sidewalks, streets, water lines, sanitary sewers, and storm sewers, and prepare notices of ordinance violations.
  • Maintain and is responsible for all survey equipment and responsible for all engineering vehicle up-keep.
  • Assist public with questions or inquiries relating to utility locations, sidewalks, streets, curb and gutter, assessments, and other information.
  • Perform clerical duties incidental to the operation of the Engineering office.
  • Work with GIS Technician in updating maps and completing required data acquisitions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Vocational Technical Degree with an emphasis in land surveying technology or civil engineering technology is preferred.
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to operate: PC, surveying equipment, and CAD software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Prefer at least two (2) years of work experience in surveying, construction staking, and construction inspection.
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Trimble Business Center, and AutoCad software.
  • Work experience using Trimble surveying (GPS and GIS) equipment (i.e. robotic total station).
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather and conditions.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to supervise the work of Engineering Interns.
  • Ability to demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to both indoor conditions, and outside weather conditions (rain, snow, wind, heat-wave, extreme cold, etc…).
  • The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.
  • The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Requires the frequent use of motorized vehicles and non-motorized equipment, including pickup/utility truck, compressors, generators, hand tools, power tools shovels, wrenches, mobile radios, tablets, and phones.
  • The noise level when working indoors is usually quiet to moderate on occasions, when working outside in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
