Engineering Technician

Under general supervision technical engineering support work including designing and drafting detailed construction drawings, topographical profiles, and related maps and specifications for City projects. Work varies, requiring individual judgment within professional guidelines and standards.

Job Duties:

  • Reviews rough sketches, drawings, specifications, and other engineering data; research information on utilities, City policies, zoning and planning ordinances, businesses, and government entities to support project implementation and completion.
  • Designs and drafts plans for public facilities, streets, storm sewers, curbs and gutters, sidewalks, sanitary sewers, water mains, and similar City projects using conventional and computer-assisted drafting methods.
  • Uses AutoCAD and other engineering software to prepare engineering and design documents and cost estimates; operates departmental equipment including computers, levels, and survey instruments. Other software may include computer assisted engineering design software and equipment, to include AutoCAD, Excel, ArcGIS, Bluebeam PDF editor, Trimble electronic survey equipment, and Trimble GPS/GIS equipment.
  • Plots maps and charts showing profiles and cross-sections, indicating relationships to topography, elevations, buildings, retaining walls, overhead power lines, and other structures.
  • Provides construction surveying on City projects and participates in all aspects of field survey work.
  • Inspects all phases of construction work for proper grading, materials, form and fill, sub-grade compaction, workmanship, and related quality factors.
  • Prepares and maintains records, reports, and studies; completes and files reports as required.
  • Communicates and works frequently with contractors, fellow employees, and various community and government agencies, demonstrating courtesy, tact, professionalism, and confidentiality. Attend meetings, training sessions, and seminars as deemed appropriate.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as directed. Management reserves the right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time.

Physical Requirements and working conditions:

  • Work is performed in both an office and field environment.
  • Duties involve remaining in a stationary position, moving about construction and field sites, and positioning self to access work areas, including bending, stooping, kneeling, and crouching, as needed to perform inspections and survey work.
  • Frequently operate computers and standard office equipment operate, as well as survey and related field equipment.
  • Moves materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds; heavier items are moved with assistance or mechanical aids, consistent with reasonable accommodation where applicable.
  • Work may be performed in outside weather conditions, including heat, cold, dampness, dust, and moderate noise levels; proper safety equipment and procedures are required.
