This is a Full-Time 40 Hours Weekly position with the Department of Agriculture & Natural Resources.

The mission of the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) is to protect and preserve South Dakota's agriculture, environment, and natural resources through effective regulatory services, natural resource conservation, and financial and technical assistance. What you will do:
As a member of the Tanks team, the
Environmental Engineer I or II will be responsible for protecting human health and the environment by implementing state and federal regulations for storage tank facilities. This position will perform tank inspections, review plans and specifications for aboveground and underground storage tank systems, and direct release assessment and remediation.
Based on the applicant's knowledge, skills, abilities, and work experience, this position may be hired as Engineer I, or an Engineer II position at the appropriate salary for the engineering level hired. Duties may include the following:
- Performing site inspections of underground and aboveground storage tank facilities
- Conducting engineering reviews of underground and aboveground storage tank systems plans and specifications
- Providing assistance to tank owners and operators, contractors, consultants, and the general public
- Reviewing environmental assessment reports to determine if contamination cases meet cleanup requirements and compliance with state rules
- Reviewing technical plans for remediation equipment intended for in-situ remediation of contaminants to determine if design criteria are adequate to provide efficient and effective contaminant reduction
- Conducting contamination complaint investigations to determine validity and recommend corrective actions where necessary
- Providing technical information and assistance to colleagues, other state and federal agencies, and the public
- Other duties as assigned

This position requires a valid driver's license, frequent travel, and occasional overnight travel. Field work can occur in a wide range of weather conditions and may occasionally require the ability to lift of up to 50 pounds. Office work will be conducted in a routine office setting. Normal work hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, fieldwork may result in flexing the work schedule. This position will be trained in the Incident Command System and will be available to work in South Dakota's Emergency Operations Center during times when the Governor declares an emergency.

Licenses and Certifications:
DANR values professional licensure. Preference will be given to candidates that have successfully passed the Engineer-In-Training/Fundamentals of Engineering (EIT or FE) exam or have the ability to obtain a license. We can provide training and experience that will allow you to pursue your Professional Engineering license. For applicants that are licensed or have passed the EIT/FE exam, please provide supporting documentation.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Only applicants that possess a bachelor's or master's degree in environmental, geological, civil, mechanical, industrial, or related engineering field from an ABET-certified college will be considered. Communicating and coordinating with other engineers and scientists, other agencies, and the public is required; therefore, good communication skills are essential.
We are looking for candidates that have:
- Knowledge of principles of environmental and natural resources engineering
- Knowledge of principles and procedures of the environmental control and natural resources fields
- Computer skills such as Microsoft Office
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to set goals and work independently or in a team setting to achieve them
- Ability to walk to sites carrying equipment over uneven or rough terrain
- Ability to wear personal protection equipment and participate in medical monitoring program
- Skill to organize and present technical information to professional staff and to citizens of the state in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing
