This Environmental Scientist III position serves as the technical lead for field collection activities and project management operations for the Watershed Protection Program. Candidate must have a broad understanding of all state and federal programs/processes that drive water resource management decisions within the program and department. Candidate will be a crew leader for National Aquatic Resource Survey (NARS) activities/projects in South Dakota. Candidate will also perform water quality based data analysis and write technical documents. This position is promotional restricted to employees within the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

This position requires approximately two-thirds time in an office setting annually with the balance coordinating and conducting statewide/regional environmental fieldwork activities. The typical office work week is Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Weekly field work schedules will vary depending on project activities and Location and is restricted to 40 hours per week with rare opportunities for overtime. Environmental field work may involve harsh weather conditions and require frequent overnight stays. This position also requires occasional travel to meetings, conferences, and trainings both in and out of state.

Licenses and Certifications:
CPR/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification training will be provided.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • bachelors of Science (B.S) degree in the environmental sciences discipline or related field;
  • five years of water quality and ecological field collection experience;
  • strong data analysis, technical writing, and communication skills related to water resource management;
  • experience conducting and coordinating activities associated with the National Aquatic Resource Surveys (i.e., crew leader).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • strong knowledge of water quality standards and other state/federal regulations and how water programs within the department work together to achieve common goals;
  • advanced knowledge of program standard operating procedures for field sampling and assessment;
  • advanced knowledge of federal standard operating procedures for National Aquatic Resource Surveys;
  • advanced knowledge of quality assurance and quality control protocols to ensure data accuracy;
  • strong knowledge of TMDL development and associated federal requirements;
  • strong knowledge of Clean Water Act sections 604(b), 303(d), 305(b), 106 and 319;
  • strong technical writing skills;
  • good organization skills and capable of multi-tasking several work activities;
  • ability to develop and implement project and program level workplans or partnership contracts;
  • ability to communicate effectively to a wide audience verbally and in writing using various communication platforms;
  • ability to direct work activities (field and office) to achieve maximum team efficiency;
  • ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with local, state, and federal water resource professionals and partners;
  • ability to lead professional staff in a team oriented manner while also mentoring staff on an individual level.
