Job Description

Summary

The Pipe Foreman leads and manages the daily operations of pipe installation crews on excavation and utility projects. This role is responsible for ensuring the accurate, efficient, and safe installation of underground utilities such as water, storm, and sewer lines. The Pipe Foreman serves as a liaison between the field crew and management, ensuring work is performed according to project plans, specifications, safety standards, and timelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate pipe installation activities including trenching, grading, laying pipe, and backfilling.
  • Interpret and communicate project plans, drawings, and specifications to crew members.
  • Monitor and ensure proper alignment, grade, and installation of piping systems using lasers and other tools.
  • Maintain a safe and compliant job site by enforcing OSHA regulations and company safety protocols.
  • Manage daily job site logistics, including materials, equipment, and labor resources.
  • Conduct pre-task planning and safety meetings; complete daily reports and documentation.
  • Train and mentor crew members; provide feedback and ensure quality workmanship.
  • Communicate with project managers, inspectors, engineers, and subcontractors to resolve issues and coordinate work.
  • Ensure productivity targets and project milestones are met.
  • Perform hands-on work as needed and support the team in complex installations or challenges.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or certifications in utility installation or construction management preferred.
  • 3–5 years of experience in underground utility installation, with at least 1–2 years in a leadership or foreman role.
  • Extensive knowledge of utility pipe types (PVC, ductile iron, HDPE, concrete) and proper installation practices.
  • Familiarity with trench safety, shoring, and confined space requirements.
  • Proficient in using pipe lasers, levels, trench shields, and other layout tools.
  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred.
  • Competent in reading construction plans and specifications.

  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to give direction and feedback constructively.
  • Knowledge of construction sequencing and jobsite coordination.
  • Ability to anticipate project needs and adjust crew operations for optimal performance.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety.
  • Proficient in daily reporting, basic computer/tablet use, and documentation.
