Department: Engineering
Reports to: Project Manager

Job Summary:
The Field Engineer is responsible for surveying, measurements, data collection, record keeping, construction oversight, materials testing, project design and implementation, and reporting to appropriate managers work progression. This position functions with a high degree of independence and will use extensive knowledge and expertise to assist on projects or provide technical input to a specific situation.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
• This position does not have any direct reports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Follows all company safety and environmental policies and MSHA, OSHA, EPA, and state rules and regulations. Acts as a champion of safety.
• Conduct engineering surveys for construction and design using GPS, total stations, robotics, and drone technology.
• Understanding and general knowledge of mining project scope, designs, documentation, and specifications.
• Develop drawings and maps used for project planning and development.
• Collect and submit survey files, stake construction features, and perform final surveys to determine project quantities.
• Maintain and operate survey and drone equipment in accordance with operational guidelines.
• Inspect construction procedures, monitor work progress, and ensure contractor compliance with project plans, specifications, environmental requirements, and safety standards.
• Observe and document activities such as grading, paving, erosion control, structure installation, and temporary traffic control.
• Conduct or support materials testing, including aggregates, soil, and water sampling and reporting.
• Prepare and maintain files, electronic diaries, test results, surveys, and project documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
• Accurately record quantities, materials used, and daily work accomplishments in applicable computer systems to support contractor payment processes.
• Works closely with Engineering Department to aid in design and help execute the plans and specifications. Provide field knowledge to optimize production and quality.
• Participate with survey and production comparisons to ensure accurate inventory information.
• Assist project engineers by answering field questions, coordinating with contractors, and participating in preconstruction or progress meetings.
• This position does not routinely supervise staff but may provide field guidance or training to new or seasonal employees when directed.
• May act as a point of contact for contractors or project personnel when project engineers are unavailable.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s Degree majoring in Civil or Mine Engineering, Construction Management, or Geology (emphasis on mining) or three (3) years of related surveying, mining, construction inspection, or civil infrastructure experience.

Required Skills/Abilities:
• High competency with surveying equipment (GPS, robotic total stations).
• Basic math and engineering concepts used in construction.
• Ability to read plans, interpret specifications, and utilize computer software for documentation.
• Drone operation experience (FAA Part 107 certification preferred).
• Experience in aggregate operations is a plus.
• An attitude of continuous improvement.
• Excellent communication skills – listening, verbal, written, and presentation.
• Proficiency in using AutoCAD, Carlson, and Microsoft Office Tools.
• A valid driver's license with a good driving record.

Physical Requirements:
• Ability to occasionally perform physical work, including lifting up to 50 pounds, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
• Ability to work around highway traffic, heavy equipment, uneven terrain, and bodies of water.
• Must be able to stand, walk, bend, lift materials and equipment, and carry out physical tasks associated with surveying and inspection.
