Creative Surfaces Inc: a national manufacturing company of custom store fixtures, signage, and countertops for retail, automotive, and casino industry with manufacturing facilities in Sioux Falls, SD and Rapid City.
ABOUT THE POSITION
The Financial Controller will be responsible for the full cycle of accounting and finance operations, financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow management, internal controls, and compliance. The ideal candidate brings experience in manufacturing environments and has the strategic mindset and leadership skills to partner with the executive team.
Key Responsibilities
1. Job Costing & Project Profitability
- Design, implement, and continuously improve job costing systems to accurately capture material, labour, and overhead costs
- Partner with project managers and production teams to ensure real-time cost tracking against budgets
- Analyze job margins and identify variances, inefficiencies, and cost overruns
- Develop standardized costing models for millwork and metal projects (custom jobs, installs, fabrication, etc.)
- Ensure accurate allocation of direct and indirect costs
2. Work-in-Progress (WIP) Management
- Establish and maintain accurate WIP tracking and reporting processes
- Oversee monthly WIP calculations, including percent-of-completion and earned revenue recognition
- Reconcile WIP schedules to the general ledger and financial statements
- Identify and address negative WIP, overbilling, and underbilling issues
- Improve visibility into production stage costing (shop, finishing, installation)
3. Financial Reporting & Controls
Oversee all accounting and HR operations, including accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, payroll, and bank reconciliations
Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Develop job-level and departmental reporting for operational decision-making
- Strengthen internal controls around inventory, labour tracking, and project costing
- Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards (e.g., ASPE or GAAP as applicable)
4. Budgeting, Forecasting & Cash Flow
- Lead the annual budgeting process, including detailed project and production forecasts
- Develop rolling forecasts with a focus on backlog, pipeline, and production capacity
- Monitor cash flow, particularly as it relates to project billing cycles and WIP
- Support pricing strategies by providing cost and margin analysis
5. Inventory & Production Costing
- Oversee inventory valuation and controls for raw materials, WIP, and finished goods
- Implement cycle counts and reconciliation processes
- Ensure proper costing of materials, waste, and scrap
- Work with operations to improve material yield and cost efficiency
6. Systems & Process Improvement
- Evaluate and enhance ERP/accounting systems to better support job costing and WIP tracking
- Automate reporting and improve data accuracy and accessibility
- Implement KPIs and dashboards for project performance and shop productivity
7. Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Lead and mentor the accounting team
- Collaborate with operations, sales, and project management to align financial and operational goals
- Act as a financial business partner to support decision-making across the organization
QUALIFICATIONS
CPA or CMA designation preferred
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 3 years in a controller or senior accounting role
Experience in a manufacturing environment is required; cabinet or millwork experience is a strong asset
Proficiency with ERP systems (e.g., Epicor, Sage, Microsoft Dynamics) and Microsoft Excel
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
Ability to thrive in a dynamic, hands-on, and entrepreneurial environment
