The Division's number one consumer protection is financial solvency of companies, and we're seeking a qualified individual to join the team providing oversight and direction of the financial analysis process for insurance companies based in South Dakota.

What Does This Position Do?

The Financial Specialist analyzes the financial status of insurance companies operating in South Dakota. You would be communicating with companies and working with Division staff to determine potential future financial and non-financial risks of insurance companies and their affiliates.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

A bachelor's degree in business, economics, accounting, statistics or similar from an accredited college or university is preferred. Individuals with financial examination experience and/or a proven track record in financial or credit analysis in lieu of insurance experience are encouraged to apply.

No licenses or certifications are required, but PIR, AFE, CFE, CPA CPCU, AIAF, or similar designations are preferred.

What knowledge, skills and abilities do we want?

We are looking for someone with the following or similar general knowledge:
  • Business and financial analysis as well as accounting principles;
  • Insurance company operations, risks, and risk management techniques;
  • Non-insurance subsidiary operations; and
  • Laws, policies, rules and procedures.

The Financial Regulation of Insurance companies is constantly evolving. We are looking for someone with the ability to:
  • Obtain an APIR, PIR, AFE, or designations of similar knowledge;
  • Attend educational opportunities to expand knowledge of insurance company financial risk;
  • Understand and evaluate the enterprise risk management functions of insurers;
  • Research and apply applicable laws, regulations, procedures and practices and the NAIC statutory accounting practices;
  • Recommend decisions based on reasonable and timely analysis;
  • Evaluate and challenge information provided by the company;
  • Multi-task, manage multiple projects, and effectively manage time;
  • Adapt to changing expectations and environments;
  • Use MS Word, Excel, Adobe and other related software programs;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • Use electronic workpaper documentation tools; and
  • Communicate recommendations to the Financial Supervisor and Assistant Director.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
