CITY OF HURON FIRE FIGHTER

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION: Under the direction of a company officer and within the established chain of command, the Firefighter is responsible for protecting life and property through fire suppression, emergency medical response, rescue, hazardous materials response, fire prevention, and other emergency and non-emergency services.

The Firefighter is responsible for maintaining the knowledge, skills, physical readiness, equipment, and professional standards necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties as a member of theHuron Fire Department.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Performs emergency-response duties in environments that may require strenuous physical exertion, rapid decision-making, operation in restricted or hazardous spaces, and sustained use of protective equipment.
• Responds to fires, medical emergencies, rescues, hazardous materials incidents, aircraft emergencies, vehicle accidents, natural disasters, and other calls for service.
• Performs fire suppression, search and rescue, forcible entry, ventilation, water supply, ladder operations, salvage, overhaul, and other assigned fireground operations.
• Provides emergency medical care within established certification and scope of practice.
• Operates fire apparatus, pumps, hose lines, ladders, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), rescue equipment, power tools, communications equipment, and other department equipment as trained and authorized.
• Follows assignments and maintains communication, crew integrity, accountability, and situational awareness during emergency operations.
• Recognizes and communicates changing conditions, hazards, safety concerns, and resources needs to the appropriate officer.
• Participates in department training and maintains proficiency in required firefighter, emergency medical services (EMS), apparatus, and operational skills.
• Take responsibility for continued professional development and improvement of individual knowledge and abilities.
• Wears, uses, and maintains required personal protective equipment (PPE), including structural firefighting PPE and self-contained breathing apparatus, in accordance with training, department procedures, and safety requirements.
• Inspects, cleans, maintains, and assists with testing of apparatus, equipment, PPE, tools, and facilities.
• Assists with pre-incident planning, fire inspections, public education, and community outreach activities.
• Completes incident reports, training records, equipment documentation, and other required department records.
• Maintains knowledge of department response areas, streets, water supplies, target hazards, apparatus, equipment, and operational procedures.
• Maintains effective working relationships with fellow members, City employees, other agencies, and the public.
• Comply with City and Department policies, procedures, standard operating guidelines (SOGs), safety requirements, and established chain of commands.

• Performs other related duties as assigned that are consistent with the responsibilities, qualifications, and operational needs of the position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Ability to perform essential firefighter duties, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, crawling, bending, dragging, and operating while wearing full PPE and SCBA.

Ability to speak clearly and hear in noisy environments, especially radio communications, ability to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. Ability to smell, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift and move up to 50 pounds. Ability to see clearly up close and far away, use peripheral vision, adjust focus and recognize colors.

Work may involve strenuous activity and exposure to fire, smoke, extreme temperatures, hazardous materials, infectious materials, traffic, heights, confined spaces, structural collapse, severe weather, traumatic incidents, and other hazards associated with emergency response.

Must maintain the physical readiness necessary to safely perform assigned duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Required)

• High school diploma or Accredited GED
• Current South Dakota Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 certifications.
• Current South Dakota EMT certification.
• Valid driver's license with a driving record that meets the City’s insurability and driving-policy requirements.
• Completion of NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 training.
• Must obtain required Driver/Operator certification within 12 months of hire date.
• Ability to meet established medical, physical, and job-performance requirements.
• Must maintain all required licenses, certifications, qualifications, and job-related requirements throughout employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Hazardous Materials training
• Technical rescue training
• Additional EMS certification or education
• Additional fire-service certifications and education
