Join Our Team as Grading/Utility Foreman in Rapid City, SD!
Western Construction is seeking an experienced and motivated Grading/Utility Foreman to oversee the daily operations of our grading crew on a variety of heavy civil constructions, including highways, streets, parking lots, driveways, and underground utilities. You’ll work closely with and report to the Grading Superintendent, coordinating with team members and subcontractors to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. This is a hands-on leadership role—you'll be actively involved on-site, working alongside and supporting the crew, resolving issues in real time, and helping drive project success.
Responsibilities:
Promote a safe and compliant work environment for crew members and the public
Report directly to and take direction from the Grading Superintendent
Assist the Grading Superintendent with scheduling, planning, and project execution
Lead, train, and supervise a grading crew of 5–10 employees in daily site activities
Stay on-site during removals, grading, and aggregate placement to oversee and assist with operations and troubleshooting issues
Measure slopes, check material depths, and verify compliance with project specs and contracts
Actively participate in work activities including but not limited to operating heavy equipment
Communicate clear goals and expectations to crew members daily
Maintain accurate and detailed daily job logs and time/material records
Track quantities, monitor job progress, and identify change orders or extras requiring pre-approval
Work collaboratively with inspectors, subcontractors, and customers to resolve challenges
Recommend improvements in workflow, equipment usage, or crew efficiency
Calculate trucking needs and assist with material/supply requisitions as directed by the Superintendent
Help develop and implement grading methods tailored to individual project needs
Other duties as assigned to support the success of the grading team
Qualifications:
- Successfully pass pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and physical.
- Must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record that will meet insurability requirements to drive company vehicles. A commercial driver's license is a plus.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in grading and/or heavy civil construction operations
- Experience in underground utilities is a plus
Strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate and direct a crew
Experience operating and understanding heavy construction equipment performance
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, grading plans, and job specifications
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Dependable, organized, and capable of managing time-sensitive tasks
Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and PPE compliance
- Ability to work a minimum of 8 hours a day, and overtime as required, including some weekends.
- Minimal travel required 2-4 weeks per year, depending on project schedules
Physical Requirements
- Able to physically lift heavy materials (up to 50 pounds) frequently throughout the work shift with or without assistance.
- Frequent walking, sitting, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, climbing, kneeling, balancing, pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, repetitive use of arms, hands, and fingers.
- Standing/working on feet for extended periods and walking across uneven terrain, climbing up and down ladders and stairways.
- Able to work in extreme weather conditions and elements, including but not limited to heat, cold, rain, mud, dust, etc.
- Frequent exposure to noise, dust, fuel, oil, and other chemicals.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment and any other safety-related equipment.
