This Geologist position will perform work related to the interpretation of geology and ground water resources in the Black Hills area and western South Dakota in general. Extensive knowledge must be developed for geology, ground water resources, and major streams in the Black Hills area. The following skills are required:
- Knowledge of geologic and ground water flow principles
- High working knowledge of how to build, maintain, and analyze data sets in GIS
- Ability to create and present PowerPoint presentations
- Prepare written technical reports that are suitable for sharing with other organizations and publication by the SD Geological Survey
Some travel will be required, including overnight stays. This position will interact with, and present to, other organizations in the Black Hills area, such as boards, commissions, and other state and federal agencies. Normal work hours are 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday. However, fieldwork may require the flexing of the work schedule to include longer work days but not to exceed 40 hours per work week. Licenses and Certifications:
Only candidates having a Bachelor's degree in geology, earth science, or a closely related field will be considered. A Master's degree is preferred.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A master's degree in geology, earth science, or a closely related field.
Knowledge of:
- South Dakota's surface and subsurface geology;
- extensive knowledge of the geology and ground water resources of the Black Hills area;
- field mapping of geology.
Skill to:
- write understandable, complete, and accurate technical reports.
Ability to:
- manage geologic, hydrologic and water quality data;
- work independently as well as in teams.
