This is a Full-Time 40 Hour Weekly position with the Bureau of Human Resources and Administration - Building and Grounds. For more information on the Bureau of Human Resources and Administration, please visit https://boa.sd.gov/ .

The Grounds Crew Leader/Specialist directs the work of Grounds Keepers and participates in grounds maintenance, including the care of lawns, trees, flowers, shrubs, sidewalks, snow removal; and/or applying pesticides and fertilizer at the appropriate time and in a timely manner.

The incumbent should be highly motivated and have the ability to work as a team with other Buildings and Grounds programs to carry out the assigned duties and have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. Incumbents will occasionally be required to work outside of the regularly established schedule, which may involve on-call time during nights and weekends at certain times of the year.

Licenses and Certifications:

The incumbent must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Driver's License, a Class B CDL with airbrakes, and a commercial applicator's license within 90 days of hire.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Prior pesticide and fertilizer application experience is preferred. Prior medium and heavy equipment operation would be beneficial.

Knowledge of:
  • gardening and grounds maintenance practices;
  • safe use of fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides;
  • safe disposal of hazardous wastes;
  • landscaping techniques;
  • setting forms and pouring concrete; and
  • types and varieties of trees and plants.

Ability to:

  • organize and delegate assignments;
  • recognize and diagnose plant diseases;
  • identify insect destruction and the necessary corrective actions;
  • follow instructions;
  • perform heavy lifting and physical labor; and
  • operate motorized vehicles, hand and power tools, and related equipment.

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
