This position works directly under the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor will provide direction on day-to-day duties. This position plays a vital role in maintaining the appearance, safety, and functionality of outdoor spaces and surrounding facilities. This position involves overseeing daily grounds maintenance activities, ensuring that lawns are mowed, trees and shrubs are properly trimmed, and flowers are planted and cared for to enhance the landscape's overall appeal. On the job training will be provided for this position.

In addition to plant care, the grounds crew leader is responsible for maintaining roads and sidewalks, keeping them clean, clear, and safe for use. They also manage and monitor sprinkler systems to ensure efficient watering and conservation of resources. Beyond outdoor duties, the role often includes general building maintenance tasks, helping to address minor repairs and upkeep needs.

A key responsibility of the grounds crew leader is to ensure that all tasks are completed efficiently and to a high standard. By organizing routine inspections and responding promptly to maintenance issues, they help ensure that state grounds remain well-kept, safe, and welcoming for the public.

The incumbent will work four 10 hour days, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Work schedule may vary due to emergency situations. The incumbent will be required to be on a snow removal team during the winter as schedule requires.

Must possess a valid driver's license.

The total compensation of Hourly Wage + State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Ground Crew Leader is approximately $59,597.00 annually.

Knowledge of:
  • lawn care and grounds maintenance practices;
  • safe use of fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides;
  • sprinkler and irrigation systems;
  • general building maintenance;
  • running and operating lawn mowers, skid steer and tractor;
  • servicing equipment;
  • basic understanding/operating computers.


Ability to:
  • organize and delegate assignments;
  • recognize and diagnose plant diseases;
  • identify insect destruction and the necessary corrective actions;
  • follow oral and written instructions;
  • perform heavy lifting and physical labor;
  • operate motorized vehicles, hand and power tools, and related equipment;
  • obtain pesticide applicator license.

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
