Summary of Position


The Health Center Nurse – Education Focus is responsible for providing general nursing services to clients of
St. Joseph’s Indian School including students, staff, and staff dependents. This position also leads educational
trainings for various campus needs. The position participates in all aspects of the Health Center’s functions
and procedures. This is a non-exempt position.

• Maintains privacy, confidentiality and security of patient information at all times.


Responsibilities


1. Participates in nurse-patient visits including assessment, diagnosis, and developing a treatment care
plan with necessary follow-up including determining if the patient needs further medical provider
evaluation and effective education and communication to patient, guardian, and student care team as
directed per policy.
2. Oversees Houseparent education and follow-up including annual Houseparent Health Center
competencies, Medication Aide training, eMAR documentation checks, Medication Cart reviews, and
other areas (such as dental and eye care) as warranted.
3. Assists the Psychotropic Nurse with student medication management including maintaining accurate
electronic database information and dispensing, overseeing, and disposing of controlled medications.
4. Assists dental-lead and eye care-lead as necessary and appropriate, (which at times may include
scheduling, follow-up, referral coordination, complicated cases, and guardian notification).
5. Assists with disease-specific needs for student care including evidence-based practice, education,
documentation, health center stay care, and communication.
6. Assists with oversight for Health Center medical resources and supplies.
7. Maintains accurate electronic and paper medical records for nurse-patient visits including
documentation and updating medications.
8. Using proficiency in laboratory skills, assists with ordering/and or performing diagnostic procedures to
identify and assess the patient’s clinical and healthcare needs.
9. Administers prescribed injections, medications, vaccines, and treatments in accordance with approved
nursing techniques.

10. Is scheduled for rotating on-call status, which may require assessment and evaluation of students,
after-hours, for serious injury or illness. As necessary, administers emergency medical care and/or
transports students to a local medical facility for further medical assessment and treatment.
11. Assists with the collection of general Health Center Performance and Quality Improvement data to
contribute to the organization’s strategic plan.
12. Completes annual HIPAA training and other required organization trainings.
13. Responsible for upholding and abiding by Health Center-specific and organizational policies,
procedures, and standing orders.
14. Reports, immediately any type of abuse or neglect, suspected or alleged, to the proper authorities.
15. Performs other responsibilities as required by the Director of Health and Wellness.


Qualifications


• South Dakota Nursing License as LPN or RN
• Pass Certified Background Check
• CPR certification
• Valid Driver’s License


Physical Demands


• Uses both hands and wrists repetitively for prolonged periods.
• May be required to assist in the transportation of students.


Expectations of Hours Worked


At least 40 hours/week. 10-Month Employee.
