Highway Maintenance Worker

Highway Department

Murray County is taking applications for a full-time Highway Maintenance Worker. Hours are typically Monday thru Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. except when assigned to the 4-day, 10-hour work schedule (normally May-October) but may vary depending on department needs.

This position is responsible for the operation of heavy motorized equipment, including graders, dozers, front-end loaders and various other equipment used for the maintenance of county roads, bridges and right of ways. This position is responsible for keeping roadways in safe driving conditions and responding to emergency events such as natural disasters.

Qualifications: Minimum of a High School diploma/GED and 4 years of experience driving heavy equipment that includes tandem gravel trucks and/or operate a motor grader. Must possess and maintain a Class A CDL with air brakes and a healthy driving record. Must have a 30-minute response time from home to work.

Requirements: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, while able to perform intermediate troubleshooting or analysis of problems; Ability to communicate effectively to work team, with occasional incidental public interaction; Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; This position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing as required for a class A Commercial Driver’s license; Ability to respond to emergency events that include severe weather, storms, flooding and blocked roads; Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs; Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations; Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with others.

Salary Range: $24.88 – $32.34 per hour
