REPORTS TO: Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach & Athletic Director
POSITION SUMMARY
The Boys Junior Varsity Basketball Coach supports the mission and goals of the Sioux Falls Lutheran School basketball program through coaching, mentorship, and leadership rooted in Christian values. This coach develops student-athletes athletically, academically, and spiritually while fostering a positive, disciplined, and Christ-centered team culture. The Boys Junior Varsity Basketball Coach works collaboratively with the Head Varsity Coach and coaching staff to support player development, game preparation, and long-term program growth.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Spiritual & Community Representation
- Represent God, Sioux Falls Lutheran School, and yourself in a Christian manner in all actions and communications.
- Model Christ-like character and encourage students to grow spiritually, morally, and socially., and socially.
Coaching & Instruction
- Plan, organize, and conduct effective practices aligned with program goals and Christian values.
- Instruct athletes individually and in groups on rules, techniques, tactics, and fundamentals of basketball.
- Support player development — physically, mentally, and spiritually — focusing on growth over outcome.
- Assist with analyzing opponents and implementing game strategies throughout the season.
Team & Culture Leadership
- Foster a positive, inclusive, Christian team culture that promotes teamwork, respect, discipline, humility, and leadership.
- Encourage sportsmanship and ethical conduct at practices, competitions, and team activities.
- Mentor athletes, encourage accountability, and help build leadership within the team.
Competitive & Strategic Responsibilities
- Lead junior varsity games and support alignment with the varsity basketball program philosophy.
- Make in-game adjustments and decisions that support athlete development and team success.
- Evaluate player performance and communicate development goals with athletes and coaching staff.
- Supervise athletes during practices, games, travel, and team events.
Communication & Relationship Management
- Communicate clearly and professionally with athletes, parents/guardians, coaching staff, and school administration.
- Support consistent communication regarding schedules, expectations, team policies, and athlete progress.
- Promote positive relationships within the basketball program and broader school community.
Program Support & Operations
- Assist with equipment organization, setup, inventory, and maintenance.
- Support off-season workouts, camps, clinics, and team development opportunities as assigned.
- Participate in fundraising activities and program events that support the football program.
Safety, Records & Compliance
- Ensure the safety and well-being of student-athletes during all activities and follow appropriate emergency and concussion protocols.
- Comply with all school, conference, and state athletic association policies and procedures.
- Support proper care and use of equipment, uniforms, and facilities.
Professional Development
- Stay current on the latest coaching information, techniques, and best practices by participating in clinics, workshops, and continuing education opportunities.
- Collaborate with the Head Coach and Athletic Director to support long-term program development and consistency.
Commitment to 3D Coaching Values
- Participate in Coaching Huddles twice per month.
- Support implementation of 3D coaching goals and strategies within the football program.
- Contribute to a coaching environment focused on growth, relationships, and student development.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Required:
- Working knowledge of basketball fundamentals, strategy, and rules
- Effective leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Ability to mentor and motivate student-athletes in a positive and Christ-centered manner
Preferred:
- Prior coaching experience at the middle school, high school, or competitive level
- Coaching certifications (e.g., NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching)
- First Aid/CPR certification
- Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of Sioux Falls Lutheran School
